Write and solve a linear equation from a short verbal or contextual situation.
Write a comparison equation
Problem
Plan A costs \(2x~+~8\) dollars and Plan B costs \(x~+~17\) dollars. Set the costs equal and solve the resulting equation for \(x\). Report the equality equation and solution.
Big Picture
What this problem is really about
Each plan contributes a complete cost expression, and “cost the same” means those expressions belong on opposite sides of one equation. Preserve both the variable charge and fixed charge for each plan. Then remove matching variable terms, undo the remaining constant difference, and verify that the resulting x makes the two original costs equal.
