MF.GR.1 Challenge MF-040-A13-V01

Read values, trends, and meaning from tables and coordinate graphs.

Choose a smart first step when reading a display

Problem

A graph has hours on the \(x\text{-}\text{axis}\), dollars on the \(y\text{-}\text{axis}\), and the point \((4,~18)\). Which complete response correctly interprets the display?

A. Read the axis labels before interpreting the coordinates
B. Swap the coordinates
C. Infer a rate from \(\text{one}~\text{point}\)

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

A useful first step should tell you what each coordinate of the plotted point represents before any calculation begins. Orient yourself to the horizontal and vertical quantities and their scales, then connect the point to those meanings. That prevents swapping the coordinates or treating one isolated point as enough evidence for a per-hour rate.
