Problem
A school-store table maps \(1,~2,~4,~\text{and}~5~\text{notebooks}\) to costs of \(\$3,~\$6,~\$12,~\text{and}~\$15\). Derive a rule relating total cost to notebooks, then use it to predict the cost for \(6~\text{notebooks}\). Report the rule and prediction.
The table must support one relationship that works for every notebook–cost pair, including the skipped input between two and four. Compare cost to notebook count row by row to identify a constant unit price, write total cost as that rate times the count, and verify the rule on a known row. Only then substitute the new count so the prediction follows from the relationship rather than the last displayed cost.
