Interpret rate of change informally as how much one quantity changes for each change in another.

Interpret rate of change in a story

Problem

A tank loses \(3~\text{liters}~\text{each}~\text{hour}\). Express the change as a signed unit rate in liters per hour.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

The words in the story determine all three parts of the rate: magnitude, sign, and units. Use liters as the changing output and hours as the input, attach a negative sign because the volume is falling, and express the change for one hour. This keeps a loss from being reported as positive or with the quantities reversed.
