Use a contextual table to read special values
Problem
A candle table maps hours \(0\), \(2\), \(4\), \(6\) to heights blank, \(17\), \(11\), \(5~\text{cm}\). Use the constant pattern to calculate the missing height and report the \(y\text{-}\text{intercept}\).
The missing entry occurs at hour zero, so it is both a starting height and the y-intercept's second coordinate. First use the known rows to find the constant height change per hour, then reverse that change from the earliest known row back to zero hours. Moving backward through a decreasing pattern requires undoing the loss, and the recovered value should reproduce every later row.
