Match a table to its rule

Problem

A table maps \(x\)-values \(0,~1,~2,~3\) to \(y\)-values \(2,~6,~10,~14\). Determine the equation represented by the table.

What this problem is really about

An equation must capture two independent features of the table: how much y changes for each one-unit change in x, and the y-value when x is zero. Find those pieces separately, place them in the rate-times-input-plus-start structure, and test the resulting rule on more than one row. Agreement everywhere is stronger evidence than matching a single pair.
