Problem

A rectangular garden is \(12~\text{feet}\) long and \(9~\text{feet}\) wide. How many feet of fencing are needed to go all the way around the garden?

What this problem is really about

Words such as fencing and “all the way around” signal a boundary-length problem. Model the rectangular garden with two copies of its length and two copies of its width, then add all four exposed sides while carrying feet. Multiplying length by width would measure the region being enclosed rather than the material needed along its edge.
