Problem

A community garden has a triangular flower bed that will be covered with mulch. The triangle has a base of \(12~\text{feet}\) and a height of \(9~\text{feet}\). How many square feet of mulch are needed to cover the flower bed?

What this problem is really about

Mulch covers the flat region inside the triangular bed, so the model must measure area rather than boundary length. Multiply the base by its perpendicular height, then apply the triangle’s one-half factor exactly once. Feet times feet produces square feet, which matches the two-dimensional material coverage.
