Let both dimensional type and practical scale determine the unit. Pool capacity is three-dimensional, and its length, width, and depth are all expressed in feet, so multiplying them produces the third power of that same unit. A merely linear unit has the wrong dimension, while very small or enormous scales are impractical for a backyard pool.
