Problem

A trapezoidal patio has parallel sides \(14~\text{ft}\) and \(22~\text{ft}\) and height \(9~\text{ft}\). Name the required geometric quantity, calculate it, and give the units.

What this problem is really about

Model the patio as a flat trapezoidal region because tile covers its surface. Average the two parallel side lengths—or equivalently take one-half of their sum—then multiply by the perpendicular height. This uses every measurement in its geometric role and produces square feet rather than a perimeter in linear feet.
