Compute and interpret mean, median, range, and interquartile range in context.

Turn raw data into a statistical summary

Problem

Calculate the mean, median, and range of \(2,~4,~5,~5,~6,~7,~9,~\text{and}~10\).

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Use the ordered list once to support all three summaries. Divide the total by the data count for mean, average the two central entries because the count is even, and subtract the endpoints for range. Labeling each calculation by its statistic prevents the two center values or the maximum and range from being confused.
