Problem

Restaurant A has \(Q_{1}~=~12\) and \(Q_{3}~=~20\) minutes; Restaurant B has \(Q_{1}~=~14\) and \(Q_{3}~=~18\) minutes. Calculate \(\text{both}~\text{interquartile}~\text{ranges}\) and identify the more consistent middle \(50\%\).

What this problem is really about

Consistency in the middle half is a spread question, so compare the two interquartile ranges. For each restaurant, subtract its first quartile from its third quartile, keeping the calculations parallel. The smaller difference represents a narrower middle fifty percent and therefore more tightly grouped wait times.
