Problem

A student says the least common multiple of \(4\) and \(6\) is \(24\). Classify the claim as correct or incorrect and give the correct \(\mathrm{LCM}\).

A number can be a common multiple without being the least common multiple. We’ll test the student’s claim by listing multiples of four and six in increasing order, locating the earliest shared value, and comparing it with the claimed value. The claim is valid only if no smaller positive common multiple appears.
