Calculate percent increase and decrease and explain what the percent measures.
Compare percent changes across contexts
Problem
Store A raises a price from \(\$40\) to \(\$48\). Store B raises a price from \(\$90\) to \(\$105\). Name the store with the greater percent increase and give its labeled percent change.
A larger dollar increase does not necessarily mean a larger percent increase because the stores begin at different prices. We’ll find each price change, divide it by that store’s own original price, convert both ratios to percents, and compare the proportional increases. Keeping each change paired with its base prevents the rows from being mixed.
