Distinguish additive change from multiplicative change in tables, graphs, and contexts.
Tell whether the change is additive or multiplicative
Problem
Analyze the consecutive changes in \(5,~9,~13,~17\). Classify the pattern as additive or multiplicative and state the repeated amount or factor.
Big Picture
What this problem is really about
Whether a pattern grows is not enough to classify it; the repeated operation is what matters. Compare every neighboring pair by subtraction to test for one constant added amount, and use ratios when testing for one constant multiplier. Requiring the same result across all gaps avoids classifying from the first jump or from the size of the numbers.
