Interpret intercepts and starting values in contextual linear situations.

Choose a smart way to compare special values

Problem

Plan A costs \(\$18\) at \(\text{month}~0\), and Plan B costs \(\$12\) at \(\text{month}~0\). State \(\text{both}\) \(y-\text{intercepts}\), identify the greater starting cost, and calculate the difference.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Month zero isolates each plan’s starting cost, so record each y-intercept from that shared input before comparing anything. Determine which start is larger, then subtract the smaller starting amount from the larger one to measure their separation. Keeping comparison and subtraction separate avoids reversing the plans or adding the two starts.
