Interpret a number line for magnitude
Problem
Look at the number line from \(2.4\) to \(2.8\). The distance between adjacent small tick marks is \(0.01\). Point \(A\) is on the \(\text{fifth}\) small tick after \(2.4\), point \(B\) is on the long tick at \(2.6\), point \(C\) is on the \(\text{fifth}\) small tick after \(2.7\), and point \(D\) is on the long tick at \(2.5\). Order the \(\text{four}\) point values from least to greatest.
The number line gives both scale and order. We’ll use the one-hundredth tick spacing to calculate the value of each labeled point, then read the points from left to right because values increase in that direction. That converts the picture into a least-to-greatest list.
